NBHM Scholarship For Master’s and Doctoral Studies (Ph.D) in Mathematics

NBHM stands for National Board for Higher Mathematics was established by Government of India in the year 1983 under DAE (Department of Atomic Energy). The main intension behind this board is to give financial assistance to research projects, doctoral and post-doctoral scholars. The NBHM is established to develop higher mathematics, draw up policies, establishing mathematical centers by giving financial assistance.

NBHM (National Board for Higher Mathematics) is a board for higher mathematics. It has various schemes to support financial assistance to individuals as well as institutions to strengthen mathematical field by studying or conducting some other programs. The NBHM is an examination board which conduct exam for Masters in Mathematics or Ph.D. in mathematics. If a student wishes to research mathematics then NBHM is a best option. An applicant can take only once NBHM for each scholarship scheme.

NBHM Scholarship Types

  • MSc:- Masters of Science Scholarships
  • Ph.D. :-  Doctoral scholarships

Post Graduate Studies Scholarship

This scholarship is made available for students who wish to study master’s degree in mathematics or Statistics. To get this scholarship student must give an outstanding performance in written tests or in interview. Candidates will be selected based on written test result/interview performances.

Eligibility Criteria

Each scholarship program has its own protocol or guidelines for who can apply or cannot apply in the scholarship exam conducted Board. Candidates are required to meet eligibility criteria to get scholarship. The main eligibility criterion is:

  • Student must be passed B.A / B.Sc with First class to get MSc scholarship in Mathematics.

Scholarship Amount

The MSc scholarship amount is increased to 8000/- (Rupees Eight Thousand only) per month. This amount is started from the financial Year 2023-2024.This 8000/- per month are available for two years (M.Sc. is 2 years program) for students to pursue higher studies.

Note:

  • The NBHM Master’s Scholarship is not given to aspirants if they are taking another master’s scholarship like DST-INSPIRE, KVPY at the same time.
  • It is available for only Indians.

NBHM Doctoral (Ph.D.) Scholarship

This scholarship is made available for students who wish to study Ph.D. in mathematics. This scholarship was made for only four years initially but later on it has changed to give scholarship for five years. The selection of the candidate is based on their academic performance and result of a selection test/interview by the department of NBHM. The candidate must do research work under an approved guide in a university of his/her choice.

Eligibility Criteria

Specific guidelines will be given for who can apply or cannot apply in the scholarship exam conducted by the Board. Candidates are required to meet eligibility criteria to get scholarship. The main eligibility criterion is:

  • Student must be passed M.A / M.Sc. with First class to get Ph.D. scholarship in Mathematics.
  • Student pursuing master’s degree in mathematics, statistics or Physics and wish to research in any mathematics branch which leads to Ph.D. can apply for Ph.D. scholarship given by NBHM.

Scholarship Amount

  • Student who get selected for NBHM scholarship program for Ph.D. get rupees 37000/- (Thirty Seven Thousand rupees only) per month for first 2 Years.  Rupees 42000/- (Forty Two Thousand Rupees Only) per month for the subsequent years will be given after evaluating work by the committee.
  • It consists of yearly contingency grant; the amount varies from year to year. At present it is giving 40000/- (Forty thousand rupees only) per annum.

Note:

  • The NBHM Doctoral Scholarship amount is not given to aspirants if they are taking another doctoral scholarship like CSIR, UGC, DST-INSPIRE) at the same time.
  • Only available for Indians.

NBHM Scholarship Selection Process

The selection process for the scholarships, the country is divided into 5 geographical zones and each zone has headed by coordinator. All the details regarding Names, affiliations and addresses of the zone and zonal coordinators can be checked below.

NBHM Test/Exam Centres

Following are the test centres where all the arrangements take place. Some centres may take back due to insufficient demand or for some other reasons beyond one’s control. An applicant can choice four [4] centres of their choice in descending order of their priority. The allotment will be based on First Come First Served. Aspirants must apply for an application at the earliest to get their choice centres.

  • Zone 1 (North): Chandigarh, Delhi, Jodhpur, Shimla, Srinagar (Kashmir).
  • Zone 2 (North Central): Bhopal, Indore, Kanpur, Patna, Prayagraj, Raipur, Srinagar Garhwal, Varanasi.
  • Zone 3 (West): Ahmedabad, Dharwad, Goa, Mumbai, Nagpur, Nanded, Pune, VallabhVidyanagar.
  • Zone 4 (East): Agartala, Aizawl, Bardhaman, Berhampur (Odisha), Bhubaneswar, Dimapur, Guwahati, Imphal, Jamshedpur, Kharagpur, Khurda (Odisha), Kolkata, Ranchi, Rangpo (Sikkim), Sambalpur, Shillong, Siliguri, Tezpur.
  • Zone 5 (South): Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kochi, Kozhikode, Madurai, Mangaluru, Mysuru, Pondicherry, Salem, Thiruvananthapuram, Tirupati.

How to Apply for NBHM Scholarship?

The aspirants can apply for NBHM scholarship program through online mode only. The tests will be accepted exclusively online mode through official web portal: https://www.nbhmexams.in.

Application Fee For NBHM Scholarship

If an applicant applies before 30th November 2023, the application fee will be Rupees Four Hundred (400/-) only for single scholarship. If they want to apply for both scholarship then an application fee will be Rupees Six Hundred(600/-) only.

An application submitted after 30th November, i.e., December 1st, Application fee will be Rupees Five Hundred (500/-) only for one application. If they want to apply for both scholarship then application fee will be Rupees Seven Hundred Fifty (750/-) only.

Note: From 2nd December 2023, the application fee will be Rupees Seven Fifty (750/-) for single application and Rupees One Thousand (1000/-) only for both application till the close of portal.

Application Process for NBHM Scholarship

Application process is made easy. Following are the steps that the candidates can follow to apply for scholarship.

  • Step 1: Create an account on the official portal by registering and validating an accurate email address. The Email Id must be accurate because the account is identified by this REA (Registered Email Address).
  • Step 2: Apply for only one application from one account.
  • Step 3: Complete the form with accurate information
  • Step 4: Pay the application fee
  • Step 5: An acknowledgement shall be generated after successfully completing an application.
  • Step 6: Keep the print out for future references.

NBHM Scholarship Exam Result

The Answer key of the written test will be displayed within hours of time. Aspirants can log in to portal and check their scores by themselves. Officially it takes about 2 to 3 weeks to after the examination to upload the result to the web portal.
